Config Servers are only needed in case you are using sharding. In such a case you need to deploy any single shard as a replica set and even the config servers as a group of at least 3 replica set nodes.
Even mongos is needed only if you have shards.

If you’re deploying a simple Replica Set without sharding, nor mongos nor config servers are needed.

thank you for this blog, I like how clearly it’s written. I am coming from the non-Percona MongoDB and one thing is not clear to me. You do not need Config Servers in Percona MongoDB?

Do I understand it right that you just start a repl. cluster of Percona mongod servers and after that start mongos instance and that’s it? Or I just normally run repl. cluster of config servers and also another repl. cluster. Are the config servers necessary?

Regards

Tomas
