Currently, there is little significance in using proxy solutions like MySQL Router, ProxySQL, MaxScale, etc. for implementing read-write separation, as it can be easily achieved in Java programs.

Since the beginning of the new MySQL Architecture Solutions (InnoDB Cluster, ReplicaSet, ClusterSet, Read Replicas) MySQL Router has been presented as an extension of the MySQL Connector (driver for the programming language used on the application servers). So we always have recommended to have MySQL Router installed on each application servers and, in the case of MySQL InnoDB Cluster for example we also advise to use the Group Replication notification, meaning that all the Routers subscribe to the cluster and the router-farm doesn’t need to poll all the time the MySQL instances, but in case of a membership change, MySQL will send a push notification to the Router. This allow to reduce the amount of queries made by the routers, it’s recommended to keep the check every minute.
And of course, we keep working on Router’s features and Performance.

Cheers,
